Choice of validation level
For the identification verification of SwissSign single domain SSL/TLS certificates, a distinction is made between three main types.
Domain Validation (DV)
The Domain Validation (DV) certificate type validates the domain, i.e. it checks whether the URL (www.example.ch) exists. This validation is performed automatically via e-mail and offers the advantage that the check takes only a few seconds. This certificate protects the visitor with so-called session encryption and does not contain any information about the operator of this site/application.
Organisation Validation (OV)
The Organisation Validation (OV) certificate type checks the organisation, i.e. the company operating the site. It also checks the official entry and confirms that the specified organisation actually exists. This information is indicated in the certificate. This ensures that the organisation is also the legal user.
Extended Validation (EV)
The Extended Validation (EV) certificate type is checked according to the strict, internationally regulated EV guidelines of the CA/Browser Forum. The checking process includes legal and operational checks and validation of the existence of the company by a state register, comparison with the official applicant information, authorisation of the certificate requester and the authentication of the owner rights for the domain.
